4C's of Diamonds; Cut.
The cut of the Diamond refers to the way a diamond is cut according to specific calculations based on a scientific formula. The cut refers also to whether a diamond is properly proportioned. This is probably the least understood of the so-called 4C's.
A well cut diamond will reflect the light from one beautifully cut facet to another and the brilliance will be evident even to the untrained eye. Your eye will not fool you when you see a well cut diamond.
A well cut diamond will show the light that it is reflected through it as brilliance and fire. A poorly cut diamond will seem dull and lifeless. The poorly cut diamond allows the light to escape through the sides and will not be as brilliant.
When buying a diamond, most people will have to compromise on some part of the 4C's to buy a diamond that may fit into their budget. Never sacrifice on cut when compromising. This is the single most important factor when purchasing a beautiful diamond that will 'speak' to you for years to come.
Poorly cut stones will either appear smaller than their well cut counterparts, or appear less brilliant. If you are unsure in this factor, find a certified diamond that is an "ideal" cut or a "premium" cut. These cuts are the best and will show your diamond in it's best "light".
